Chi Kung means "energy skill". It is a generic term applied to over a thousand different styles of meditation, breath exercises, movements and postures which are intended to develop an awareness of, and the ability to consciously participate in the activities of "chi"--the vital energy which flows through, regulates and sustains our many bodily functions.

The recorded history of Chi Kung stretches back more than 3,000 years in China, but its shamanistic roots almost certainly go back even farther. Chi Kung was developed and perfected over the centuries by Buddhist and Taoist monks, physicians, philosophers and martial artists, and their differing goals and perspectives added to the diversification of individual systems. There are Chi Kung techniques intended to develop one's physical fitness, promote self-healing, increase spiritual awareness, improve martial skill and to influence another person's chi, even at a distance.

All of these many styles and applications have one common thread- that our human systems, be they physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual, are functions of Chi. An imbalance of the Chi will lead to an imbalance somewhere in our system. Chi Kung allows the practitioner to be aware of the Chi flow and by taking conscious participation in that flow, release the blockages which caused the original imbalance. Page 2...
